Non-EU arrivals staying over 90 days now apply for a long-stay visa D abroad, from 1 October 2026

From 1 October 2026, people from outside the European Union who plan to stay more than 90 days (for work, study, family reunion and similar) apply for a long-stay visa D at a Luxembourg embassy, or at a Belgian embassy where Luxembourg has no mission. They no longer first ask the immigration directorate (DGIM) in Luxembourg for a temporary stay authorisation. The visa D lasts 6 months.

Effective from 1 October 2026.
